Wine Decanters and Carafes Reviews

A decanter is a serving container for wine. You pour the wine out of the bottle into the decanter in order for it to "breathe" - you aerate the wine while you pour it into the new container, and the container is also designed to expose a large surface area of the wine to air. A wine simply cannot breathe by pulling out the cork - the tiny neck of a bottle will not allow any air exchange.

For wines that have sediment - i.e. old red wines - the decanting process also allows you to leave the "sludge" from aging behind in the original wine bottle.

A carafe is simply a pretty container to serve the wine from, without being designed for the aeration or sediment-removing aspects.
